Some tips for choosing your domain name
It may be a temptation to have a very descriptive website address, but it goes without saying – shorter names are far more memorable!
Despite the simplicity of this statement, it is still far too common to find names that are over 30 or 40 letters long. This is totally impractical, so rules of thumb are:
- Keep it short – up to 15 letters is around the maximum. A lot of the shortest names are already taken, but try a bit of creativity and you’ll find the one you want.
- Avoid hyphens, the minus sign –. Names like www.fashion-is-great.com reads nicely but does not translate well over the phone or for memorability. Some people don’t even know what a hyphen is.
- Avoid _ underscores. EG www.my_website_site.com it will drive you mad explaining the underscore to people face to face and over the telephone.
- Avoid hard to spell words – jewellery (or jewelry) is spelt different ways in the US and UK. It’s also notoriously difficult to spell. Words like this are best avoided if you possibly can.
- Avoid misspelling words or making up words, its hard enough to spell with out you making up words.
- Avoid Numbers – is it 9 or is it nine? is it 1 or one? it will drive you mad having to explain your domain name every time. number1cars.com or numberonecars.com
- If you’re a Australian company, it will pay dividends to use a .com.au website name (e.g. www.maowebstyle.com.au) as this tells potential visitors that you are based in the Australia.
